Laurier welcomes research and policy fellow from the University of Oxford

Nov 15/12

The Laurier community is invited to hear Victoria Nash, a policy and research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), University of Oxford, speak Nov. 20 about “the hunt for common ground between advocates of child protection and freedom of expression.”

Advocates of online child protection and freedom of expression share a deeply held conviction about the importance of protecting basic human rights, yet in practice any shared convictions are affected by sharp disagreement regarding the design and enactment of specific policies and regulation.

Nash’s work seeks to connect OII research with policy and practice, identifying and communicating the broader implications of OII's research into Internet and technology use. Recent projects have included efforts to map the legal and regulatory trends shaping freedom of expression online for UNESCO, and building links between child protection and free speech communities. She is currently developing a program of research around online risk and harm.

As director of Graduate Studies at OII, Vicki is also responsible for overseeing all of the Institute’s teaching and degree programs. She is also course director of the OII Summer Doctoral Program, and serves as a lecturer in Politics at Trinity College, University of Oxford.

The event, presented by Laurier’s Department of Communications, is Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 101A of the Dr. Alvin Woods Building at the university’s Waterloo campus.
