The Tshepo Institute's Academic Excellence Awards 2013

Mar 23/13

The Tshepo Institute for the Study of Contemporary Africa will award two prizes annually in recognition of academic excellence. Only one application per student may be submitted. Academic excellence will be evaluated in terms of students’ written work and community involvement or leadership in the fields of 1) social justice and development and 2) human rights and leadership.

The Tshepo Institute invites students to submit essays on any topic that broadly addresses contemporary development, human rights, and social justice issues in Africa. Possible topics may include Health and Education; Governance; Human Rights and Leadership; and Economic and Social Development.

Details:

Each application will include: 1) a Letter of Application, 2) an essay that is suitable to the specific award, and 3) a letter of recommendation from a professor who is able to speak to the candidate’s merits in relation to the award. The Letter of Application should clearly state the award the student is applying for and address the candidate’s suitability for the award, such as evidence of a strong academic performance and community involvement or leadership. The essay should NOT exceed 12 double spaced pages or 3000 words (excluding references and appendices).

Eligibility:

This competition is open to all students enrolled at Wilfrid Laurier University from September 2012 to April 2013. Students must have a minimum GPA of 70% to be eligible for consideration.

Submission Instructions:

Applications submitted for consideration should be conceptually and stylistically excellent. The student’s name, e-mail address, mailing address, home university and department or program of enrolment should appear on the first page of the essay only, and all other identifiers should be removed. The student should send AN ELECTRONIC COPY of their application materials (in pdf or word format) to Dr. Robert Ame, Director of the Tshepo Institute at:   rame@wlu.ca.

*Please be sure to note TSHEPO Academic Excellence Award in the subject line of your email.

Selection Process:

A committee of TSHEPO members will evaluate each application and select the two winning candidates, who will receive the award at TSHEPO’s Annual General Meeting in September. The winners of the competition will be invited to present a summary of their essay at TSHEPO’s annual meeting.

The award consists of a prize of $200 each and a certificate of excellence.
