Twelve high school students and four teachers from Chongqing, China, are at Laurier attending a two-week science camp. The trip is reward for winning a science competition sponsored by Open House Magazine, a China-based publication with a readership of over 400 million youth.

“This science camp is a ‘pilot’ for what we hope to be a bigger project next summer,” says Peter Donahue, director of Laurier International, which is hosting the camp along with the university’s Faculty of Science. “Because Laurier has an office in Chongqing, these students were able to participate in this extraordinary opportunity, but in the future we wish to invite more winners of this science competition from all across China.”

From July 29 to August 8 the students will attend seminars instructed by Laurier science faculty in areas such as physics, computer science, biology, math and chemistry, followed by experiments and hands-on experience, such as a canoe trip down the Grand River to collect specimens for biology or building robots for physics and computer science.

“The students are very bright and very eager to learn,” says Kelly Lippert, research coordinator for the Faculty of Science. “They’re so excited to be here at Laurier and apply what they’ve learned, and they also get the chance to explore Waterloo Region.”

The students will tour RIM, the University of Waterloo, the Perimeter institute and the Toyota plant. In the evenings they will participate in on-campus recreation activities and attend community events. The group will also explore Southern Ontario, taking trips to the Ontario Science Centre, downtown Toronto, Niagara Falls and Lake Huron.
