Wilfrid Laurier University and staff association approve new contract

WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University is pleased to announce that a new contract for staff members has been approved by the university’s Board of Governors and ratified by members of the Wilfrid Laurier University Staff Association/Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (WLUSA/OSSTF District 35).
The three-year agreement is retroactive to July 1, 2011 and expires June 30, 2014.
- 1.5 per cent effective July 1, 2011; 2 per cent, July 1, 2012; and 2.5 per cent, July 1, 2013.
- Members’ contributions increase to 7.5 per cent from 7 per cent, and increase to 9 per cent for earnings above Year’s Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YMPE).
“These are very challenging economic times and I would like to acknowledge the hard work and goodwill that all parties contributed to reaching this settlement,” said Max Blouw, president of Wilfrid Laurier University. “Pension plans across North America are facing severe difficulties. I am pleased to say that we achieved pension reform through mutual problem-solving and a scale adjustment that is responsible in this environment of wage restraint and that is in line with other settlements in the university sector.”
WLUSA/OSSTF District 35 represents 492 full-time and 41 part-time employees throughout the university.

Meanwhile, talks between the University and the Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty Association continue. Mediation dates are scheduled for Feb. 29 and March 1.
