University and union agree to second meeting with conciliator to assist with CAS talks

Oct 24/13

Wilfrid Laurier University and the Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty Association, which represents Contract Academic Staff, met with a provincially appointed conciliator Oct. 23 to continue bargaining for a new CAS contract.

The day-long discussions were productive and both parties agreed to meet again with the conciliator Nov. 4.

In October, the University and the union agreed to jointly ask the Ontario Ministry of Labour to appoint a conciliation officer in the current round of collective bargaining.

Conciliation is a normal part of the collective bargaining process and occurs in the majority of collective agreement negotiations. The conciliation officer's role is to act as a facilitator and assist the two sides in reaching a settlement.

The University is optimistic that the involvement of an experienced, independent third party will be helpful in resolving outstanding issues. The University and union bargaining teams have met 21 times since the two parties exchanged initial proposals May 14, 2013.

The University remains committed to reaching an agreement that is in the best interests of students and the institution.
