MDRC Team is Represented at the World Parkinson's Conference

Oct 7/13

Dr. Quincy Almeida and 6 students recently attended the World Parkinson's Congress in Montreal - the first time held in Canada.  4 students presented their research by poster and had the opportunity to interact with many others in their field.  Topics included:

Elise Bisson "An Investigation of the Relationship Between Clinically-Assessed and Self-Reported Measures of Side Affected in patients with Parkinson's Disease".  The purpose of this study was "to assess whether clinical and self-report measures of side affected are in agreement and to determine the best clinical predictor of side affected."

Kaylena Ehgoezt Martens "Are Sensory-Perceptual Deficits Responsive to Dopaminergiv Replacement Therapy?  The purpose of this study was "to investigate whether sensory-perceptual deficits can be improved by slowing visual flow speed and dopaminergic medication."

Frederico Pieruccini-Faria "Freezing of gait symptoms in Parkinson's disease impairs vision for perception but not action: evidence from gait with obstacles."  The purpose of this study was "to evaluate whether vision for perception and action are impaired in PD-FOG."

Matthew A. Sacheli "Gait velocity and step length predict aerobic capacity in patients with Parkinson's disease."  The purpose of this study was "to determine if gait parameters can predict aerobic capacity in PD."

There were 3,300 delegates representing 70 countries from around the world.  Attendees attended workshops, presentations and heard updated information and research findings.  Just as importantly, everyone interacted and rubbed shoulders with other people with Parkinson's and shared their stories.  Caregivers visited and encouraged each other.
