Managing with Incomplete Inventory Information

Apr 18/13

Friday, April 19, 2013
11:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Ernst & Young Boardroom

Abstract

One of the critical assumptions in the inventory management literature has been that the current level of inventory is fully observed. Yet it is often the case in practice that the inventory level is only partially
observed. Most of the well-known inventory policies are not only non-optimal, but are also not applicable in the partial observation environment. The purpose of this talk is to review recent developments in the analysis of partially observed optimal control problems that arise in the management of inventory systems. The talk will conclude with suggestions for future theoretical as well as empirical research in inventory problems with incomplete information.

Suresh P. Sethi is Eugene McDermott Chair of Operations Management and Director of the Center for Intelligent Supply Networks at Naveen Jindal School of Management, the University of Texas at Dallas. He has written 7 books and published more than 350 research papers in the fields of manufacturing and operations management, finance and economics, marketing, and optimization theory. He serves on the editorial boards of several journals including Production and Operations Management and SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization.

Two conferences were organized and two books edited in his honor in 2005-6. Other recent honors include: Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1994), IEEE Fellow (2001), INFORMS Fellow (2003), AAAS Fellow (2003), POMS Fellow (2005), IITB Distinguished Alum (2008), SIAM Fellow (2009), President of Production and Operations Management Society (2012).
