WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University will mark its centennial birthday by awarding 100 of its most promising first-year undergraduate or graduate students with new full-tuition scholarships.

Students who embody the traits of leadership, passion and achievement – the ‘Laurier DNA’ – are encouraged to apply. Laurier also encourages family members and friends to nominate any students who exhibit these traits but who may not otherwise know about the scholarships.

Promising future students will be considered regardless of geographic location.

“Laurier is a community that inspires and supports people to live lives that are meaningful and engaged,” said president and vice-chancellor Dr. Max Blouw. “As the university enters its second century, we will build on this tradition by offering scholarships to students from across the country and around the world who have demonstrated leadership and purpose in their lives and a real desire to contribute to their communities and beyond.”

Applications can be submitted until Feb. 28, 2011. Scholarship offers will be sent out at the beginning of May 2011.

Students will be asked to submit a completed application, including:

  • An explanation of how they embody the three characteristics of leadership, passion, and achievement
  • Three work experiences
  • A highlight of the student’s extra-curricular activities and volunteer experience

This new scholarship program is one of many centennial initiatives being introduced at Laurier to mark the year-long festivities leading up to the university’s 100th anniversary date of Oct. 30, 2011.
