WATERLOO – Students from the Laurier School of Business and Economics set a Canadian record as the first school in Jeux Du Commerce (JDC) history to earn the title ‘School of the Year’ four years in a row. The Laurier team brought home the title from the annual Jeux Du Commerce Central (JDCC) competition, where they also earned the Academic Cup for the second consecutive year.

JDC Central, hosted in 2013 by Dalhousie University, is one of Canada’s largest business competitions, welcoming over 500 students from 13 universities.

Laurier’s 48-member JDCC team placed within the top three teams for six out of the eight functional areas, as well as the sport, charity and debate components.

“Each individual on our team proudly accepted JDCC as an opportunity to grow, learn, and better themselves in many ways,” said co-captain Josh Raxlen.

The co-captains attribute the team’s success to the support network within the school and the JDC Central delegation.

“Our students take pride in representing Laurier, and their passion, dedication, and work ethic is unparalleled,” said co-captain Igor Kusljic.

Student delegates compete in eight academic case analyses, parliamentary-style debates, social challenges, and sports tournaments. The Academic Cup is awarded to the school with the best case competition results and the team that performs the best overall takes home the ‘School of the Year’ title.

"Our team did the impossible," said Kim Morouney, associate dean, Laurier's School of Business & Economics. "They had the support of 11 dedicated faculty and staff members, but it was our students' talent, persistence, and absolute commitment that brought home a fourth win for Laurier. We could not be more proud of them."

In addition to School of the Year and the Academic Cup, Laurier’s 2013 achievements included:

First place: sports, entrepreneurship (tied) and finance
Second place: management of information systems (MIS), marketing and human resources
Third place: debate, business strategy and charity
