International Development Week event schedule
Laurier's Brantford campus
International Development Week, celebrated at universities and colleges across Canada for 23 years, will be celebrated for the first time at Laurier Brantford, February 4-8.
“International Development Week is an opportunity for the Laurier Brantford community to become aware of those who are active and interested in international development on the campus,” said Peter Donahue, Director of Laurier International. “The events of the week will provide opportunities to learn and share ideas on how we can increase our community involvement in today’s international development issues.”
The week begins on Monday with a lecture by Ravi Gokani, Community Service Learning Coordinator at Laurier Brantford, on the “Truths and Myths of International Service Learning” in RCE 217 at 10 am. Also on Monday, Laurier International will host an Open House of its Global Engagement Centre, RAC East 138 at 3 pm. The Laurier Brantford community is invited to come and learn about the Centre’s programs and services and meet International Student Advisor, Melissa DiLeo and Global Engagement Coordinator, Kathy Rose.
On Tuesday, students and staff of the LEAF Program Choir will perform at the International Food Fair in the lobby of RCW from 12 pm to 3 pm. The Laurier Brantford community is invited to come and meet the students and staff of the LEAF program and enjoy food and song from around the world. Also on Tuesday, the documentary, “Running the Sahara”, will be shown in the Carnegie Building, Room 206 at 7 pm. This 2007 feature film chronicles the 111 day expedition of three runners across the entire width of the Sahara desert, a distance of 6,920 kilometers, through six countries: Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya, and Egypt. Ray Zahab, one of the runners and Founder, Expeditions Director of impossible2Possible, will introduce the film via Skype. Admission is free.
On Wednesday, Ten Thousand Villages will host a discussion on Fair Trade in the lobby of RCW starting at 12 noon. Members of the Laurier Brantford campus are invited to learn how to identify where to buy fair trade products locally.
International Development Week will conclude on Friday with a presentation by Susan Dimitry, Research Facilitator in the Office of Research Services (Brantford), on international research being conducted by Laurier Brantford’s faculty in RCW 324 at 10 am.
