Olympic medalist Cassie Campbell-Pascall to speak at Outstanding Women of Laurier event

WATERLOO – Cassie Campbell-Pascall, a two-time Olympic gold
medalist in women’s hockey and a Canadian Sports Hall of Fame inductee,
will deliver the keynote address at the Outstanding Women of Laurier (OWL) event March 29 at 11 a.m. at the Waterloo Inn and Conference Centre.
Campbell-Pascall’s
name is synonymous with hockey. She was captain of Canada’s National
Women’s Hockey Team from 2001 until her retirement in August 2006 –
making her the longest serving captain in Canadian hockey history. She
is also the only captain, male or female, to lead her team to two
Olympic gold medals, in 2006 and 2002.
The Outstanding Women of
Laurier Award will be presented at the March 29 event to a
student-athlete selected from a number of finalists. The award
recognizes a female Laurier student who successfully combines athletic
and academic achievement with an active commitment to leadership and the
development of young athletes through community teaching or coaching.
“This event showcases our exceptional female student-athletes and the impact they are having within our community,” said Peter Baxter,
director of Athletics and Recreation at Laurier. “Cassie is an ideal
role model and speaker for OWL, which celebrates athletic, academic and
community service.”
Campbell-Pascall has remained a trailblazer
in retirement. In October 2006, she became the first woman to do colour
commentary for CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada. One year later, she was the
first female hockey player to ever be inducted into the Canadian Sports
Hall of Fame.
When not working as a TV analyst for TSN’s women’s
hockey coverage and for Hockey Night in Canada, Campbell-Pascall
dedicates her time to charitable endeavors in support of Ronald McDonald
House. She currently lives in Calgary with her husband and daughter.
The Outstanding Women of Laurier luncheon will be hosted again by Daiene Vernile, anchor and producer of Provincewide,
the CTV current affairs program, and a Laurier alumna (BA ’85).
Originally from Toronto, Vernile began her broadcasting career at
multicultural radio station CHIN. After working as the station’s
legislative reporter for many years, Vernile moved to Texas and reported
for an ABC affiliate. In the early 1980s, she returned to Canada and
has worked at CTV Southwestern Ontario ever since.
