WATERLOO – It’s time for Laurier alumni, students and the community to dust off their purple and gold clothing and spend some fun time on campus. This year’s homecoming runs from Friday, Oct. 2 to Sunday, Oct. 4 and promises more than the traditional homecoming fare.

While still offering the ever-popular pancake breakfast and football game, the Laurier homecoming weekend features a sold-out performance by one of Canada’s top comedians, Russell Peters, and a fundraising road race in support of Laurier’s Sun Life Financial Movement Disorders Research & Rehabilitation Centre, which helps those living with Parkinson’s disease.

“Our 10,000 visitors will converge on Laurier’s campus to help the university celebrate our 81st annual action-packed homecoming weekend,” said Roly Webster, acting director of alumni relations. “We pride ourselves on offering our alumni, students and the community an extraordinary homecoming weekend adventure, one that promises something for everyone, from class reunions to the family-friendly Interactive Zone and the Laurier Loop road race.”

The weekend begins with the 12th annual Dean’s Alumni Golf Classic at Rebel Creek Golf Club on Friday, Oct. 2, followed by the Athletic Hall of Fame dinner.

Saturday’s events include a free pancake breakfast, a family-friendly Interactive Zone at University Stadium and the annual homecoming football game. The Laurier library will also be showcasing its archives and special collections digitization project throughout the day. At 1 p.m., football fans are invited to watch skydivers deliver the game ball as the Laurier Golden Hawks play the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Saturday’s events end with a sold-out performance by comedian Russell Peters at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

Homecoming continues Sunday at 10 a.m. at University Stadium where alumni, students and the community are invited to lace up their running shoes to support Laurier’s Sun Life Financial Movement Disorders Research & Rehabilitation Centre. The Laurier Loop event gives participants the option of completing a 2.5-, 5-, or 10-kilometre race. A new addition to homecoming is the Ecumenical Worship Service at the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary at 10 a.m. Sunday. The service will feature the WLU Alumni Choir directed by Dr. Lee Willingham.

A number of Laurier class reunions will also be held. The class of 1959 will celebrate its golden anniversary, while milestone events will be held for the classes of ’79, ’84, ’89, ’99 and 2004, and the ’79 Master of Social Work class.

For registration, tickets and detailed information, visit www.laurieralumni.ca/homecoming or contact Janet Robinson at 519-884-0710 ext. 3180, or alumni@wlu.ca. Events are open to Laurier alumni, students, community members, faculty and staff unless otherwise stated.
