WATERLOO — Wilfrid Laurier University has appointed Scott Hayter to the position of vice-president: university advancement.

Hayter, who has extensive experience in university development in Canada and the UK, has served as Laurier’s assistant vice-president: development since 2004.

“Scott Hayter has done an outstanding job in the quiet phase of the Century Campaign,” said Dr. Robert Rosehart, president and vice-chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University. “He is passionate about Laurier and has assembled a highly effective team, which will serve the university well in the future.”

Beverly Harris, chair of Laurier’s Board of Governors, praised Hayter for his success in the campaign so far.

“I am delighted that Scott will continue to play an important role in supporting the university’s ambitions,” said Harris. “He will provide a valuable source of continuity as Laurier welcomes in-coming president Dr. Max Blouw, who takes office September 1.”

Hayter said he looks forward to working with the whole Laurier community — from students, staff and faculty, to alumni, donors and supporters — as the university prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2011.

“I am thrilled to assume the leadership of University Advancement,” said Hayter. “It is a very rewarding experience to work with such a dedicated community of people, and I look forward to playing a key role in helping to advance the university’s mission and to shape Laurier’s future.”

Hayter joined Laurier in January 2004 after 14 years in senior development roles with educational institutions in Canada and the UK, and an eight-year career as an officer in the Canadian military.

Prior to joining Laurier, Hayter was director of corporate development and communications at the University of Durham, UK, where he was responsible for development, alumni relations, communications, international relations and overseas student recruitment. He also planned and implemented a £175-million fund-raising campaign.

Before moving to the UK, Hayter served as associate director, external relations (development) at Brock University (1995–1996); deputy headmaster at Robert Land Academy (1988–1995); and as an officer in the Royal Canadian Regiment (1980–1988).

Hayter has a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration from Brock University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Royal Military College. He has authored numerous articles and conference papers on university development, and is a member of the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) and serves on the Philanthropy Commission for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

Hayter is also active in the community, serving on the Waterloo Intelligent Community Forum Committee, the Kitchener Downtown Advisory Committee, and the Kitchener Oktoberfest Advisory Committee, among others.

Hayter takes over the role of vice-president: university advancement from Arthur Stephen, who completed his second term in the position at the end of June. Stephen continues at Laurier as special advisor to the president, and retains responsibility for public affairs and liaison services.
