MA in Social Justice and Community Engagement now accepting applications
Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
BRANTFORD – The Master in Arts (MA) in Social Justice and Community Engagement (SJCE) program is now accepting applications for September 2013. Students in SJCE investigate and understand the root causes of social and environmental injustices and find resolutions at the community level. The program is interdisciplinary and engages such topics as social inequality, inclusion/exclusion, marginalization, political ecology, resilience, environmental injustice, feminism, globalization, and democracy.
During the 12-month program, students engage a diverse suite of courses offerings as well as complete both a major research project (MRP) and a mandatory community placement. Situated in the Department of Contemporary Studies, the SJCE program will benefit from the strong community-oriented culture at Laurier Branford and is the first social justice program in Canada to offer a mandatory community placement. “Working with a community group or public organization will allow students to fully engage with, and apply the classroom lessons in a ‘real world’ situation,” said Dr. Brenda Murphy, Associate Professor, Contemporary Studies and SJCE program coordinator. “The community placement will develop autonomy and professional capacity, effective communication skills and will ground the theories and skills that are central to the program.”
