North American Studies students cross borders

Mar 31/10

Seven Laurier North American Studies majors participated in the recent 14th annual Crossing Borders Multidisciplinary Student Conference on the United States, Canada and Border Issues held in Niagara Falls, New York.

Andrea Johnson, Teghan Barton, Andrew Henderson, William Kennaley, Kristine Deacon, Roxanne Pegg and Ryan Khan presented their work on cross-border issues ranging from Arctic sovereignty and Aboriginal Peoples to Canadian television, migrant worker programs and the Loyalist legacy.

The conference, organized by the University of Buffalo and Brock University and sponsored by both the United States Consular General in Toronto and the Canadian Consular General in Buffalo, featured 27 students from six universities. This year the conference was held jointly with the Niagara region’s 2010 Binational Economic and Tourism Summit, which featured keynote speakers on fostering growth through innovative economic development and binational initiatives.

The Laurier students presented research developed as part of the capstone course in the North American Studies program, “NO 401: Borders and Boundaries in North America”, taught by Dr. Katherine Ann Roberts.

“This is the first time Laurier has participated in the Crossing Borders conference and I am very pleased with the students’ professionalism and the quality of their work," Roberts said. "It gave them the opportunity to interact with graduate and undergraduate students from both sides of the border and to observe the dynamics of bilateral discussions. I hope participation at this conference will become a regular feature of the North American Studies major.”

For Teghan Barton, president of the North American Studies Student Association, the trip was very stimulating. "Exchanging views with fellow students from Brock and University of Buffalo was the highlight for me," she said. "I really did get another perspective."
