NASP co-sponsors workshop on new visa requirements for Mexico

On December 9, Laurier’s International Migration Research Centre (IMRC), co-sponsored by the North American Studies program, held a workshop to examine the implications of Canada’s new visa requirements for Mexican nationals. The workshop featured expert panelists from Laurier, York University and the University of Toronto, as well as Daniela Gil Sevilla, Deputy Consul, Consulate General of Mexico in Toronto. The speakers and attendees gathered in the Paul Martin Centre to assess the motivation and possible consequences of the Canadian government’s July 14, 2009 requirement that Mexican nationals obtain a visa to travel to Canada. They also explored the implications of the visa requirement for the refugee process, migrants and their families, diplomatic and trade relations with Mexico, and the wider implications this policy decision has in terms of the securitization of the immigration and refugee process.
