Workplace injuries and fatalities can usually be traced to a few root causes that may vary by sector. The Ministry of Labour’s proactive inspection blitzes on sector-specific hazards are designed to raise awareness and increase compliance with health and safety legislation. The ministry tracks each sector to determine if the blitzes result in a long-lasting increase in compliance and decrease in injuries.
In February and March 2013, Ministry of Labour inspectors will be visiting Ontario workplaces to look for slip, trip and fall hazards. Of particular interest: hazards involving ladders and falls from heights. These blitzes are announced in advance and results are reported after they are completed. The Ministry will base their inspection on relevant legislation contained in the regulation for Industrial Establishments, which applyto specific areas of Laurier.
Things you should know:
Slipping, tripping and falling is one the leading causes of injury at Laurier. Preventing these injuries should be a key part of workplace safety.
Workers should be aware of these hazards:
- Slippery and uneven surfaces
- Debris and tripping hazards
- Dark and obstructed pathways
- Unsuitable footwear

Everyone has responsibility for health and safety as an essential part of their job. Report safety concerns to your supervisor.
Employers should:
- Ask workers to report safety concerns
- Identify hazards and train workers about safety practices
- Discuss possible solutions with workers and follow up with their progress
- Comply with all other duties under the OHSA and applicable regulations
