Details on the program are the following:
The visit will focus on
introducing students to Taiwan and its the challenges in a context of global
political and economic change. The study trip is sponsored by the government of
Taiwan and is open to both graduate and senior undergraduates (3rd or 4th
year). Ideally, applicants should have some prior knowledge of Asia, such as
through a university course. All applicants must hold valid Canadian passports
with expiry dates no less than six months before the departure date.
Applications must be received by the Laurier International by noon on Monday
April 23. They should include their CV, transcript and a brief letter explaining
the reason for the applicants interest in the study trip.
Successful
applicants will be required to submit a short paper (a minimum of 1,500 words)
on this topic to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto at least one
week before the delegation departure date.
Departure Date: May 22, 2012
very early in the morning (check-in at Pearson late on the evening of May 21,
2012)
Duration of Stay: 1 week
Costs: The Taiwan government will provide
the delegation participants with airfare between Toronto and Taipei (Eva
Airlines economy class), travel cancellation insurance, lodging in Taiwan (hotel
and all meals), and ground transportation in Taiwan. The delegation participants
will be responsible for their own medical insurance, ground transport to and
from Pearson International Airport, and pocket money. The students will be
assigned an officer from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan, who will
accompany them in Taiwan during the study trip and they will join professors and
students from York University and the University of Ottawa. The main focus of
the visit will be meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and visit other government institutes in Taiwan, such as Mainland
Affairs Council, to gain a basic understanding of Taiwan's economic and
political developments. There will also be an extensive tour of Taipei and the
surrounding area.
