WATERLOO — Travel Healthcare Insurance Solutions Inc. has presented Wilfrid Laurier University with a cheque for $10,000 to help support Laurier’s new office in China, which opened in October 2007.

Keith Segal, president of Travel Healthcare Insurance Solutions Inc., presented the cheque this week to Dr. Sue Horton, Laurier’s vice-president: academic, and Nikita Zhu, manager of Laurier’s China office.

Based at Chongqing University in one of the most dynamic regions of China, the new Laurier office promotes academic collaboration, research partnerships and faculty and student exchanges with Chinese universities.

Segal traveled with the Laurier group to China last October to help launch the university’s office, and was impressed with the efforts Laurier was making to forge international connections.

“This is an exciting time,” said Segal. “Supporting Laurier International falls into our mandate of helping clients to expand and gain exposure to the international marketplace.”

Peter Donahue, director of Laurier International, is equally enthusiastic about the donation and the partnership it represents.

“Our relationship with Travel Healthcare Insurance Solutions will give Laurier students and faculty, as well as local business community members, an unprecedented number of opportunities to gain a greater understanding of the Asian perspective,” said Donahue.

In April, Laurier president Dr. Max Blouw will lead a delegation to China, where he will be a keynote presenter at the China-Canada Science and Technology Seminar and will participate in the Team Canada Science and Technology delegation to the Chongqing High Tech Fair. Laurier has also been invited to present to the Canadian Embassy in Beijing on the School of Business and Economics’ Supply Chain Management program.

Travel Healthcare Insurance Solutions Inc., which operates as StudentGuard™ Health Insurance and GlobalGuard™ International, provides health-care insurance to the field of International Education worldwide. StudentGuard™ is the firm’s flagship line of comprehensive health insurance products for international students studying in Canada and abroad, as well as for teachers and participants in exchange and co-op programs.
