Winter 2013 Message from Program Coordinator
Feb 12/13
Hello again! The Winter Term at Laurier finds Anthropology reinvigorated and forging ahead despite the recent snowfall that has made movement a tricky business in the Waterloo region. A revitalized Anthropology Students Association led by Virginia Pecjak and Jessica Foott has put on a number of events already this academic year. These have included a trip to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and two ‘Meet the Profs’ evenings, the first of which was a convivial drinks affair at the the Jane Bond Tavern while the second featured Bowling Nite at the nearby Waterloo Bowling Lanes. At the conclusion of the latter, it was clear that some students are rather too good at the sport!
The ASA is looking forward to putting on an Easter Egg Hunt in the Spring at the specific request of fourth year students who attended the AN410 course conclusion dinner in December. This potluck dinner, another annual affair, showcased the baking as well as the cooking skills of students. Will next year’s cohort ever beat the special icing creations on offer that night? Of course, the traditional after-party (at an undisclosed location) extended well into the evening!
On a more academic note, Anthropology has put together a short Winter Seminar Series over February and March this year, which features the combined talents of myself, our Professor Emeritus Mathias Guenther, and new teaching colleague Jennifer Long. The first seminar (on February 7th) was on the styles of design among gated communities in South Africa. In his turn, Mat will be talking about” San Art and Identity” on the 19th of March and Jennifer will be speaking about “Research in the Workplace: Experiences of Community-engaged Scholarship” on March 26.
For those Anthropology students on the road to imminent graduation in the Summer, we will be hosting our Annual Employment Workshop in order to provide counseling to Anthropology and Arts students on how to prepare for job interviews and – just as importantly – how to markets their specific skill sets to prospective employers. The aim of this workshop is to help students identify the range of aptitudes and special strengths that they possess through their Arts education, and to give them advice on how to market their specialized skills to their best advantage as employees and entrepreneurs.
With Winter regards,
André Czeglédy
