Outlook/Microsoft Solutions

Migration to Outlook takes place Saturday, May 31

The second stage of the migration to Microsoft implementation will be completed this weekend and will consist of two parts:

1.    Removal of Novell software and printing from university computers that are connected to the network.
2.    Migration from Novell email to Microsoft email for all university email accounts.

We will remove all Novell products that exist on your computer and then install and configure Microsoft Outlook. This will happen overnight, starting at 2 a.m. on Saturday, May 31. After the software changes are applied, computers will be restarted. This could take between 20 to 30 minutes.

The changeover to Microsoft Outlook email from Novell GroupWise email will start on Saturday, May 31 at 5 a.m. The entire process is expected to take no longer than two hours. You will not have access to the email system during this time.

This process will happen in the following order:

  1. A notification message and reminders will be sent to the Laurier community prior to the start.
  2. Redirection of all wlu.ca email traffic to Microsoft Exchange Server.
  3. Reconfiguration of the Blackberry Enterprise Server to point to MS Exchange.
  4. A notification message and reminders will be sent to the Laurier community prior to the start.
  5. Synchronization of all mailboxes to ensure all emails are delivered you may not see emails right away! Please rest assured, none of the emails have been lost. It might take a few hours to fully synchronize this is normal and expected behaviour.
  6. Blackberry device mailboxes will be prioritized for synchronization. Blackberry Messenger, PIN and telephone services will not be affected during this time.


The new Microsoft Exchange and GWAVA Retain (email archive) servers are ready and are being populated with your email and archives in preparation for the weekend. When the synchronization is complete all emails and calendar entries older than 90 days will be in the Retain tab of Outlook your correspondence is safe, it just may take a little bit longer to arrive for the moment, and we appreciate your patience.

Starting this weekend, GroupWise web mail is retiring; you will be able to access your email anywhere, anytime on any device at https://outlook.wlu.ca and your archives at https://mailarchive.wlu.ca as long as you have an Internet connection available!
