WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University’s Robert Langen Art Gallery will host its second Empty Bowls charity event on the university’s Waterloo campus Thursday, May 10, 2012.
Empty Bowls is a long-running annual fundraiser for the Food Bank of Waterloo Region organized by the Waterloo Potters' Workshop and the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. Last year, Laurier hosted a special parallel event to celebrate the university’s 100th anniversary, raising $4,000 for the Food Bank.
This year, members of the Waterloo Potters' Workshop will again create 100 bowls for the Laurier event. Participants will have the chance to pick their bowls, which will then be washed and readied for the five gourmet soups that will be served in Laurier’s Theatre Auditorium from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. During the luncheon, the Tim Louis Trio jazz group will perform and there will be a raffle for two gift bags donated by the Laurier Bookstore.
This year’s event also features an online silent auction for a bowl created by Lisa LaFlamme, CTV news anchor and Laurier honorary degree recipient. Bidding for the bowl will take place from April 2 to May 9 at https://web.wlu.ca/emptybowls. Please note, the link will not be live until April 2.
The bowls will be on exhibition in the Robert Langen Art Gallery May 2-9, from noon to 5 p.m. (except Sunday, May 6, when the gallery is closed).
Tickets for this event are $40 and go on sale April 2. Tickets must be purchased in person at the university’s Ceremonies and Events office, 202 Regina Street, room R263, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with cash or cheque (payable to Wilfrid Laurier University). For more information about tickets, contact Sharline Doss at sdoss@wlu.ca or ext. 3139.
Laurier’s Empty Bowls event is supported by Laurier Food Services and the Laurier Bookstore.
The Robert Langen Art Gallery has played a vital role at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Waterloo campus since it opened in 1989. As Laurier’s visual arts centre, the Robert Langen Art Gallery provides knowledge, stewardship, appreciation and enjoyment of Canadian art and culture to members of the Laurier community and beyond. The gallery’s annual programming complements concepts and theories in Laurier’s academic curriculum and integrates community outreach initiatives as related to the visual arts.
