WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University will hold an open house to launch its new Aboriginal Student Centre at Laurier’s Waterloo campus Jan. 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 187 Albert St.

“The opening of the Aboriginal Student Centre is a first at Laurier and an important addition to Laurier’s commitment to provide exemplary services to students,” said Jean Becker, Laurier’s senior advisor: Aboriginal initiatives. “We have a long tradition of educating Aboriginal students and the student centre will enhance the experience and success of Aboriginal students at Laurier.”

Dorothy French, elder-in-residence with Laurier’s Master of Social Work program, will lead traditional elder teachings, a smudging ceremony and sharing as part of the event. Becker will welcome guests, and Aboriginal Initiatives staff will be on hand to conduct tours of the building.

In addition to offering services to Aboriginal students, the student centre is designed to serve as a valuable resource for all students, staff and faculty to learn about Aboriginal issues.

The centre offers students cultural programming such as traditional teachings, events and workshops as well as talking circles and visiting elders. The centre also provides students with links to the local Aboriginal community.

Academic services offered through the centre include academic referrals, links to financial resources, peer support, study areas, a resource centre and library.

In addition to the services offered through the new Aboriginal Student Centre in Waterloo, Laurier's Brantford campus has an Aboriginal Resource Centre available to Aboriginal students for socialization, study groups, and Native Student Association meetings.

The Jan. 26 event is free and open to the public.
