Regional Police Conduct Crime Prevention Initiative

Feb 12/13

Waterloo Region, Ontario ––Waterloo Regional Police are launching a

crime prevention initiative focusing on residential areas surrounding the

university district.

Officers from North Division, assisted by Auxiliary Members, will be going

door-to-door this evening (Feb 11) starting at 6pm to speak with residents and

deliver flyers containing crime prevention and home security tips.

Though some of the following tips are of interest specifically to student

residents, most apply to all members of the community.

Keep all doors locked, even when you are at home, day and night.

If you share a home with roommates who have different schedules

develop a plan to carry keys and make an effort to lock all doors

each time you leave the residence.

If you are going to be away, let your roommates know so they are

aware of who should and who shouldn’t be inside.

Introduce yourself to your neighbours. Knowing each other makes it

easier to identify suspicious behavior. Contacting police promptly

increases the likelihood of suspect apprehension.

If you see suspicious activity or someone enters your residence

under questionable circumstances, ensure your safety first and call

911 as soon as possible. Stay on the line with the operator to

provide as much detail as you can. This will assist the responding

officers in locating suspects.
