Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies announces new Assistant Dean appointment

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Aug 9/12

Dr. Joan Norris, Dean, Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies is pleased to announce the one-year appointment of Dr. Matt Smith, associate professor of biology, as Assistant Dean in the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.

Matt’s primary responsibility is to enhance the postdoctoral fellows experience at Laurier, by working with faculty supervisors and postdoctoral fellows. He represents the university on the Canadian Association of Postdoctoral Administrators, will design and implement an “individual development plan” for postdoctoral fellows, and continue to serve on Faculty committees established to address professionalization needs of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Matt is a graduate of Laurier, obtaining a BSc in Honours Biology in 1995.  He then obtained his PhD in Biology from the University of Waterloo in 2000, and went on to do a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  He joined the Department of Biology at Laurier in 2004, where as a molecular plant cell biologist and biochemist, he studies intracellular protein trafficking.  Specifically, his lab focuses on the mechanism of protein targeting and import into chloroplasts, the intracellular compartments of plant cells in which photosynthesis takes place.  Since joining the Department of Biology, he has been successful in obtaining research funding from NSERC (including an NSERC Discovery Accelerator in 2010) and other funding agencies (including an Ontario Early Researcher Award in 2007).  He has used his funding to help support his research program and the training of highly-qualified personnel; he has supervised or co-supervised 8 Master’s students, 2 PhD students, 3 postdocs, and many undergraduates.  He has been appointed to an NSERC Discovery Grant Evaluation Group (Genes, Cells & Molecules) starting in 2013.  His teaching has included undergraduate courses in Introductory Biology (BI110), Cell Biology (BI338), Molecular Biology (BI346), and Recombinant DNA Technology (BI441), as well as graduate courses in Research Ethics and Writing (BI600) and Plant Biology (BI610).  He served as Acting Associate Dean in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (2011-12).

Individuals wanting information about postdoctoral fellowships at Laurier are invited to contact Matt by e-mail at msmith@wlu.ca, or by phone at 519-884-0710, ext. 2916.
