WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University’s third annual Brent McFarlane run in support of the Sun Life Financial Movement Disorders Research and Rehabilitation Centre (MDRC) takes place Sunday, April 11 at 9:30 a.m.

All proceeds go to the MDRC, the first centre to use research and rehabilitation to provide direct and immediate benefits for individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.

“The MDRC is doing very significant work,” says event organizer and professor Bill McTeer. “People are becoming more aware of Parkinson’s as a movement disorder, and – as with any health issue – the more resources we can provide to our researchers, the more chance there is to help people better survive and thrive despite having the disease.”

The three- and 10-kilometre runs are named for Brent McFarlane in recognition of the work he has done for the university and the community. McFarlane is a speed, agility and conditioning coach for the Laurier Golden Hawks varsity football team, and he helped lead the team to victory at the CIS Vanier Cup in 2005. He now visits the MDRC as a Parkinson’s patient.

The Brent McFarlane Run for MDRC will take place Sunday, April 11 at 9:30 a.m. outside the Bricker Academic Building at Wilfrid Laurier University. Sign in and late registration begins at 8 a.m. Following the run, medals will be awarded to the winners in each age category, and there will be refreshments and a donation barbecue.

For more information and to register for the race, visit www.wlu.ca/kpe/mcfarlanerun. Online registration ends Thursday, April 8, but runners can still register in person Sunday, April 11 before the race.
