Colleen Willard-Holt named chair of the Ontario Association of Deans of Education

Colleen Willard-Holt, dean of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Education, has been named chair of the Ontario Association of Deans of Education (OADE), which represents the interests of the faculties and schools of education in Ontario’s universities.

During her yearlong post, which begins Sept. 1, Willard-Holt hopes to work with the Ontario ministries of Education and Training, Colleges and Universities to investigate the benefits and drawbacks of lengthening Ontario’s bachelor of education program from the current duration of eight months.

“The field of education is changing rapidly and we need to prepare teachers for the challenges of the classrooms of the future – classrooms that haven’t been invented yet,” said Willard-Holt. “The current curriculum was created in the 20th century, and we need to move into the 21st.”

Willard-Holt received her PhD in Educational Psychology from Purdue University, Indiana. Prior to earning her PhD, Willard-Holt taught high school special education, high school mathematics and gifted education. Her areas of research include gifted children with disabilities, implications of neuroscience research for classroom teachers, multiple intelligences, international experiences for teachers and pre-service teacher education.

She has published in the fields of gifted education, multiple intelligences and general teacher education, and has addressed regional, national and international audiences on those topics.
