Laurier hosts international economics conference
Deputy governor of the Bank of Canada to speak Friday

WATERLOO — Wilfrid Laurier University will be hosting the second Small Open Economies in a Globalized World conference June 12-15.
Plenary addresses will be delivered by renowned economists, including David Longworth, deputy governor of the Bank of Canada, Phelim Boyle, Wilfrid Laurier University, Michael B. Deverex, University of British Columbia and David Laidler, University of Western Ontario and C.D. Howe Institute.
The conference is a truly international one, leading economists from 28 countries from all continents. While the focus of the conference is on international finance, international monetary and fiscal politics and international trade in goods and services, there will be presentations from all areas of economics.
“Small open economies, including Canada, are particularly vulnerable to the forces of globalization,” said Laurier economics professor Jerzy Konieczny, organizer of the conference. “The sub-prime crisis has had significant negative effects in many countries. Dr. Longworth will talk about the recent challenges it has posed for policy, while Phelim Boyle will discuss the financial aspects of the crisis.”
Presentations at the conference will cover many aspects of open economies including the effect of trade on economic development, income inequalities and environment, collusion, corruption and fraudulent behaviour and exchange-rate regimes.
