Wilfrid Laurier University Alumni Association presents Awards of Excellence

The Wilfrid Laurier University Alumni Association established the Awards of Excellence program to honour alumni, faculty and staff who, through their actions and accomplishments, make a difference in the Laurier community and the community at large.
The Alumni Association recognized deserving individuals from the Laurier and surrounding community at this year’s Awards of Excellence Dinner on May 5.
Student Alumna of the Year Award
The 2008 Student Alumna of the Year Award was presented to Leah Verouden. This award is given to a Laurier student who is recognized for outstanding contributions on the Laurier Student Alumni (LSA). Leah played a vital role with the LSA over the last four years, including her time as the LSA President. In her role she showed outstanding leadership skills to further the profile of the LSA and develop new programming in the community.
Honorary Alumna Award
This year’s Honorary Alumna Award was presented to Mary D’Alton. The Honorary Alumna Award recognizes friends of Laurier whose contributions enhance the institution and its surrounding communities. Mary selflessly devotes her time, wisdom and leadership to Laurier. While acting as a community leader, Mary is a member of the University’s Board of Governors and played a significant role in establishing the Outstanding Women of Laurier Luncheon (OWL), honouring Laurier’s females athletes.
The 2008 Hoffman-Little Award was presented to Dr. William McTeer. This award is given to an individual that has been recognized for teaching excellence at Laurier. Dr. McTeer was instrumental in developing the core curriculum for the Kinesiology & Physical Education program, emphasizing a student-centred approach to teaching. Dr. McTeer has had a very strong impact on his students. In fact, upon graduation, a student from the Kinesiology program endowed the “Dr. Bill McTeer Award” for undergraduate Kinesiology & Physical Education Students in the Faculty of Science.
Dr. Edward Wang is this year’s recipient of the Faculty-Mentoring Award. This award is given to an individual that has been recognized for outstanding support and mentoring of Laurier students. Since beginning at Laurier in the 1970s Dr. Wang has been an outstanding mentor to students and peers, and always ensures that students realize their full potential.
Schaus Award for Staff
The 2008 Schaus Award for Staff was awarded to Arthur Stephen. This award is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to the university by a staff member. Arthur has been a fixture at Laurier for the last 30 years and is responsible for making Laurier what it is today. Currently, Arthur is acting as the Special Advisor to the President and does so with the same energy and passion that he has possessed each year that he has been at Laurier.
Alumnus of the Year Award
This year’s 2008 Alumnus of the Year Award was given to Sonny Kumpf. This award recognizes outstanding achievement by a Laurier alumnus. Sonny has been an ambassador for Laurier for the last 30 years, volunteering to help raise the profile of the institution. Sonny has done so with genuine passion and enthusiasm for Laurier. He has been a key member of the Laurier Golf Classic Committee and is responsible for endowing over $500,000 to the Student Horizon Fund. As an alumnus of the Laurier hockey program, he was instrumental in creating the Hawkey Alumni Club to bring together players from the past and present.
