Laurier to host award-winning filmmaker and documentary on teens and self-injury

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Feb 27/08

WATERLOO — As part of campus activities celebrating International Women’s Week, Wilfrid Laurier University will host the Canadian premiere of the documentary, Cut: Teens and Self-Injury, on March 4 at 7 p.m. in the Bricker Academic Building. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the film’s director and producer, Wendy Schneider.

The event is free. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cut emphasizes the experiences and struggles of youths who engage in, or are affected by, self-injury. The film features interviews with a range of people, from vibrant young teens to rock icon Shirley Manson, and includes artwork and music produced by its subjects.

Following the screening, Schneider will speak about the two years she spent conducting research. She will also facilitate a discussion session with the audience. Mental-health professionals from K-W Counselling will also be on hand to discuss relevant campus, community and regional resources.

Schneider recently completed a three-week tour with Cut at colleges and conferences in Maine, Vermont and New York, including a panel discussion at Columbia University and the New York State College Health Association conference. The film recently won Best Wisconsin Documentary at the Beloit International Film Festival.

“I was really attracted to Laurier’s commitment to community involvement,” says Schneider on her upcoming visit. “That’s a perfect fit for Cut because the screening can open up discussion about self-injury on campus as well as in the community at large.”
