WATERLOO The Honourable Minister Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, will be at Wilfrid Laurier Universitys Waterloo campus Nov. 22 to announce the Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE). The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the KPMG Atrium, Schlegel Building.

We are pleased to welcome Minister Clement to our university to make this exciting announcement, said Laurier President and Vice-Chancellor Max Blouw. CODE will be a wonderful opportunity for students to gain entrepreneurial and application-building experience.

CODE, an appathon taking place Feb. 28 to March 2, 2014, will challenge students from across Canada to turn valuable federal government data into useful and usable apps and information. Students, technology innovators, developers and open data enthusiasts can use government data available through the open data portal at data.gc.ca to create new, consumer-friendly applications, which can then be used for social or commercial purposes.

Our Government is excited to see Government Open Data, a previously untapped resource, fueling the development of apps that will help Canadians in their day-to-day lives, said Clement. Innovations like the apps created at CODE will ensure Canada remains at the forefront of the global Open Data movement.

The CODE appathon is the newest addition to the governments Open Data initiative, which has already made roughly 200,000 datasets available through its online portal at data.gc.ca, from air and water quality monitoring, to border wait times, permanent residency applications and crime statistics.
