Randall Wakelam

Research Associate

Assistant Professor, War Studies, Royal Military College of Canada

Randall Wakelam has had a varied military and academic career which began in 1969 as a Reserve musician. After graduating from the Royal Military College he flew helicopters for the Army, serving in three different squadrons before commanding 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron from 1991 to 1993.
He has since been employed as a member of faculty and administrator both at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto and at the Canadian Defence Academy Headquarters in Kingston. He has served as an instructor for both the Regular (Directing Staff) and Reserve Force (academic faculty) command and staff programmes, a programme developer for senior programmes and as a Director both at CFC and at its superior formation the Canadian Defence Academy. After a brief retirement allowing him to complete his PhD, he returned to the Canadian Forces College as Director of Curriculum in 2006. He has taught a variety of courses including leadership, air warfare, and operational planning.
In November 2009 he joined the faculty of the Royal Military College of Canada as a member of the civilian faculty.  He continues to teach and research in leadership and air warfare. 
In 2009 he published The Science of Bombing:  Operational Research in RAF Bomber Command and co-edited The Report of the Officer Development Board:  Maj-Gen Roger Rowley and the Education of the Canadian Forces.  He is currently beginning work on a biography of Air Marshal Wilfred Curtis who served as Canada’s Chief of the Air Staff from 1947 to 1953.
