Donald Tansley spent much of his life as a senior public servant in Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and the Government of Canada. He has worked in the fields of finance, health and welfare, international development, industrial development and fisheries. In 1999 Tansley became a member of the Order of Canada. However this abundance of lifetime experiences, paled in comparison to the 995 days, 519 of them overseas, that Don served in the armed forces of Canada.
Growing Up and Going to War 1925-1945 is the story of Don Tansley’s childhood in Saskatchewan, and his life as a young soldier in the Regina Rifles. In his own voice Don chronicles his decision to enlist, his time in England, and finally, his combat experiences during the liberation of Northwest Europe. Don presents a young soldier’s perspective of his own role in the Battle for Moyland Wood, the liberation battles of 1945 in Holland and the long journey home to Canada.
