Dr. John W. Schwieter is an Associate Professor of Spanish and Linguistics and a Faculty of Arts Teaching Scholar in the Department of Languages and Literatures at Wilfrid Laurier University. Before joining Wilfrid Laurier University, he taught in the United States at the Florida State University, Tallahassee Community College, Spoon River College, and Western Illinois University and in Mexico at the University of Guadalajara and the Ahpla Institute of Mexico City. Having visited over 65 countries, he enjoys traveling and leading the annual SP200*: Study Abroad course.
He is also a Visiting Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Centre for Applied Research and Outreach in Language Education (CAROLE) at the University of Greenwich in London, UK. CAROLE is one of the most extensive research centres in second language studies in the world consisting of over 100 associate members. In this capacity, he periodically travels to and resides in the centre where he works with colleagues in second and third language acquisition, delivers public lectures, and supervises graduate student research projects. Dr. Schwieter holds a PhD in Spanish Language and Linguistics from the Florida State University; an MBA in University Organizational Leadership and Project Management from the University of Wisconsin; and an MSEd in Language, Culture, and Education and BA in Spanish from Western Illinois University.
Research and Laboratory
Dr. Schwieter is the Director of The Psycholinguistics & Language Acquisition Laboratory, a collaborative research enterprise which seeks to investigate language from cognitive and sociocultural perspectives. The research conducted in the lab has explored issues related to bilingualism and multilingualism, language acquisition, language teaching and learning, and translation processes. Dr. Schwieter is also the founding general editor of the Bilingual Processing and Acquisition book series (John Benjamins Publishing) and he serves on editorial advisory boards for four journals and as a regular or occasional peer reviewer for several others. His studies have appeared in international books and journals and one of his recent articles was ranked among the most cited in the flagship journal Bilingualism: Language and Cognition (Cambridge University Press).
