Biography

Arthur G. Szabo is a Professor of Chemistry and formerDean of the Faculty of Science (2000 - 2007) at Wilfrid/> Laurier/> University/>/> in Waterloo/>, Ontario. Prior to that, he was at the University/> of Windsor/>/>, in Windsor/>, Ontario/>/>, beginning in 1994. While at Windsor/>/> he served as Director of the School/> of Physical Sciences/>/>, Director of the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research, Head of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Professor of Biochemistry. From 1967 to 1993 he was a research officer at the National Research Council in Ottawa/>/>. When he left to move to Windsor/>/> in 1993, he was a Senior Research Officer in the Institute for Biological Sciences./>/>

Dr. Szabo was born in Toronto/>/>. After graduation from Etobicoke Collegiate Institute, he studied chemistry and mathematics at Queen's University, Kingston/>/>, where he received an Honours BSc. Subsequently he received MA and PhD degrees in organic chemistry from the University/> of Toronto/>/>. During this time he held an NRC bursary and studentship and a Shell Canada fellowship. He pursued postdoctoral studies in organic photochemistry at the University/> of Southampton/>/> as an NRC overseas postdoctoral fellow.

Dr. Szabo has published more than 140 research articles and has earned an international reputation for his work on fluorescence studies of protein structure and function. He was awarded the John Labatt Lecture Award from the Canadian Society of Chemistry in 1993, for outstanding achievement in biochemistry. During the course of his career he has been awarded research grants totalling more than $1.5 million, from NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council), the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Bayer-Red Cross, and NATO. He has been a visiting scientist or visiting professor at the Polish/> Academy/>/> of Sciences, Warsaw/>/>, Centre Biophysique Moleculaire, Orleans/>, France/>/>, Consejo Superior di Investigaciones Cientificas/>, Madrid/>, Spain/>/>, University/> of Parma/>/>, Parma/>, Italy/>/>, and the University/> of Sao Paolo/>/>, Sao Paolo/>, Brazil/>/>. He has served as a member and chair of NSERC grant selection committee 32, Cell Biology, and is currently a member of the College/> of Reviewers/>/> in the Canada Research Chair program.

Dr. Szabo is an associate editor of the journal Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and was a founding associate editor of the Journal of Fluorescence. He was chair of the Canadian Society for Chemistry annual conference and exhibition in Windsor/>/> in 1997. He has supervised the research work of 9 PhD students, 10 MSc students, and 14 postdoctoral fellows, several summer students and four-year honours students. He has had numerous productive collaborations with other scientists and with industrial research groups. He is frequently called upon to review manuscripts from scientific journals and research grant proposals submitted to national and international agencies.
