Biography

Paul Maxim completed his term as Associate Vice-President: Research in 2011.  After returning from sabbatical in 2012, he will be joining the Laurier School of Business and Economics, Department of Economics.


Before joining Laurier in 2006, he was Associate Dean of Research and Operations in the Faculty of Social Science, and Professor of Sociology at the University of Western Ontario, where he taught from 1981 to 2006. Prior to that, he was an Instructor in the Department of Criminology at Simon Fraser University.



Professor Maxim attended the University of Toronto where he obtained an Honours BA. Following that, he received an MA in criminology from the University of Ottawa and a PhD in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. He has been a visiting scholar in the Criminology Institute at Cambridge University and in the Department of Economics at the University of Copenhagen, where he was awarded a residential scholar award by the National Bank of Denmark.

Professor Maxim has numerous publications in the areas of criminology, social statistics and research methods, and population economics. His most recent research focuses on the socio-economic integration of immigrants into Canada society and on the formal labour force experiences of Canada’s Aboriginal peoples.
