The purpose of the Leadership Development Mentorship Program is twofold. Its primary aim is to create meaningful relationships between Laurier leaders, allowing leaders to successfully navigate the university environment through the application of leadership strengths. The second purpose is to provide leaders with opportunities to make a difference in the professional lives of their colleagues through sharing of professional experiences and expertise.

About the program

The program is open to any member of the management group (manager level and above). Prospective mentors and mentees will indicate their interest by completing a profile form and submitting it to Learning and Organizational Development (L&OD). L&OD will review profile forms and match mentees with a mentor. All mentees and mentors will then be invited to attend an initial information session to ensure that the participants have all the necessary tools and resources in order to create a successful mentoring experience. This session will provide an overview of the program, the mentor/mentee roles and responsibilities and provide a series of resources for the mentorship relationship. Mentors and mentees are asked to commit to meet 1-2 hours per month for 6-12 months.

  • Nurture leaders' personal and professional development to enable strengths based goal achievement
  • Increase job satisfaction and retention of leaders

Learning Objectives

By the end of the mentorship program the:

Mentees will be able to:

  • Identify their individual learning objectives
  • Identify their strengths based development goals
  • Develop a plan to execute the development goals
  • Collaborate with the mentor to plan and prepare for challenges in achieving goals
  • Develop metrics or a scorecard to track their success
  • Identify next steps and develop a follow-up plan 

Mentors will be able to:

  • Enhance their own skills in mentoring, counseling, listening and modeling skills
  • Collaborate with the mentee to develop a plan of action, a scorecard and a follow-up plan relating to the mentee's goals
  • Assist with identifying challenges to achieving goals and create a plan to overcome the difficulties
  • Share their expertise and knowledge about leadership

Matching Mentees with Mentors Process

  • Mentees and Mentors self-identifying by completing an online profile form and submitting it to Learning and Organizational Development, 
  • L&OD will match the mentee with an appropriate mentor taking into consideration the mentee and mentor's preferences as outlined on the profile form
  • Prospective participants will be contacted within one week of submitting their application form
