Canadian bass-baritone Brian McIntosh has earned international acclaim for his “powerful, voluminous voice and imposing presence” (New York Newsday). A regular performer with opera companies and festivals in North America and Europe, Mr. McIntosh has enjoyed success as Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Doctor Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro and Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Banquo in Macbeth, Nourabad in Les Pêcheurs des Perles and Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola. For his performances of Kaspar in Der Freischütz, he has been applauded as “a 'schwarzer' Bass of a special class..." (Fränkische Nachrichten). Recent seasons have included Commendatore in Don Giovanni with Vancouver Opera, Pistola in Falstaff with Opera Lyra Ottawa, Glagolitic Mass with Singapore Symphony, Alidoro in La Cenerentola with Calgary Opera, Lodovico in Otello with Manitoba Opera and Opera Lyra Ottawa and Peneios in Daphne with Pacific Opera Victoria. Since his debut in 2000 with New York City Opera, Mr. McIntosh has performed with that company in Capriccio, Madama Butterfly, Don Giovanni, Les Pêcheurs des Perles, Rigoletto, La Boheme (including a live broadcast of La Boheme on PBS), La Rondine, Carmen and La Traviata. He also recently performed Luther/Crespel in Tales of Hoffmann with Virginia Opera, Haly in Italiana in Algeri with Vancouver Opera, Sacristan in Tosca with Calgary Opera, and Banquo in Macbeth with Opera de Montreal.
Other performances include the King of Egypt in Aida with International Opera Festival (Skydome), Bailli in Werther with Vancouver Opera, Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola with Opera Lyra Ottawa, Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Vancouver Opera, Bonze in Madama Butterfly with Edmonton Opera, Sparafucile in Rigoletto with Grand Rapids Opera and the title role in The Mikado with Calgary Opera. Mr. McIntosh was featured as Plutone in Orfeo with Helsinki Festival, Antinoo in Il Ritorno d’Ulisse with Bad Hersfeld Festival, Germany and Krushina in The Bartered Bride with Kiel Opera and Essen Stadt Theater. He has performed in Königskinder, Zar und Zimmerman and The Jacobin with the Schlossfestspiele Zwingenberg, Germany, Die Fledermaus with Opera Lyra Ottawa, The Rake’s Progress with Edmonton Opera and Salome with Canadian Opera Company, Pittsburgh Opera and Arizona Opera.
Concert engagements include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at Avery Fisher Hall, Haydn’s Harmoniemesse and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with Riverside Choral Society New York, Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass with Seattle Symphony and Vancouver Symphony, Opera Gala of Opera de Montreal, Heiligmesse with Riverside Choral Society (Manhattan), Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion with Deutsche Bach Solisten, as well as performances of Verdi’s Requiem, St. John’s Passion, Mozart’s Requiem and Brahms’ Four Serious Songs.
Brian McIntosh was Associate Professor (1999-2005) at Rutgers University (where he received tenure), and Asst. Professor (1991-1999) at the University of Western Ontario. He directed opera productions at both institutions. In Dec. 2003, he was a guest Professor of Voice at the Hochschule für Musik in Köln, Germany. In July 2008, Prof. McIntosh joined the Department of Music at the University of Alberta, as an Associate Professor teaching voice and running the opera program. Prof. McIntosh joined the Faculty of Music at Wilfrid Laurier University in 2012.
