Biography

As manager of Laurier's Writing Centre, my primary responsibilities are to create, conduct, and evaluate writing programs that help all Laurier students write more effectively in academic and professional settings, and to provide Laurier faculty with support for writing instruction in their disciplines.  My goal is to encourage the participation of students, faculty, and staff in developing writing excellence.

At the writing centre, our work draws on research from writing studies, education, psychology, and applied linguistics.  My doctoral work explores how undergraduate students learn to write in the disciplines, specifically in anthropology.  Current studies at the writing centre include a collaborative, cross-Canada SSHRC-funded project exploring university writing assignments in the Faculty of Science, and we have just completed a HEQCO-funded study of our on-line Assignment Planner.

Prior to coming to Laurier in 2010, I had the pleasure of working in writing centres tutoring students and teaching several writing courses, including ESL writing, rhetoric and exposition, and oral discourse, at Western University.
