Biography

Lewis Kaye received his PhD from the Joint Graduate Programme in Communication and Culture at York and Ryerson Universities in Toronto, where his dissertation explored the relationship between technology, space and the social organization of aural experience. Along with his primary focus on sound and culture, his research has examined questions of intellectual property and digital culture, the relationship between technology and aesthetics in electronic media art, the political economy of communication, and the history and development of communication and cultural policy in Canada. Lewis is also a practicing sound artist whose work explores the aesthetics of space and everyday sound. His recent piece, Through The Vanishing Point (part of a site-specific exhibition on Marshall McLuhan designed for McLuhan's Coach House office on the University of Toronto campus [produced in collaboration with David Rokeby]) was one of three primary exhibitions in the 2010 CONTACT Photography Festival, and his mobile sound project, You Are Here, was commissioned as the official MP3 audio guide for Toronto's first Nuit Blanche in 2006.

His most recent publication is entitled "The Aesthetics of Inevitable Failure: Process and Contingency in the Presentation of Electronic Media Art", in the International Journal of Arts and Technology, 3(4), 2010.
