Biography
I spent my childhood and youth living in small towns across Canada, from Alberta to PEI and everywhere in between. After graduating from high school in Saskatchewan, I moved to the Nation's Capital to pursue my university education, with the goal of becoming a criminal lawyer. Somewhere between first and third year, I fell in love with the discipline of criminology and found my niche in researching and writing about the social justice issues that I am most passionate about. For this, I am indebted to Professors Michael Petrunik and Bob Gaucher at the University of Ottawa who, each in their own way, inspired me to be a better scholar. Instead of law school, I decided to pursue graduate studies, eventually resulting in a PhD in Sociology from Carleton University.
I joined the faculty of Laurier Brantford in 2009, following the completion of a term as a SSHRC Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Ottawa. My doctoral research focused on the difficulties faced by the families of incarcerated men in Canada. Since coming to Wilfrid Laurier I have been involved in various and ongoing research in the areas of verbal violence in families, community reintegration following conviction for sexual offending, and the national priorities of Canadian women. I am a primarily qualitative researcher with a strong interest in classical and contemporary social theory and theories of stigma, in particular. Since 2008, I have also acted as chair of the Policy Review Committee for the Canadian Criminal Justice Association and I am passionate about contributing to the improvement of the Canadian Criminal Justice system.
I very much enjoy teaching and meeting with students and am happy to discuss any of my research interests, or general career and research areas in criminology.
In my spare time I enjoy reading novels, yoga, good coffee and spending time with my partner, Chris, and our sons, Jonathan and Samuel.
