Biography

Duane Heide is a part-time instructor with the Faculty of Education at Wilfrid Laurier University.  He teaches Primary/Junior Mathematics courses including EU412 and EU413.

Prof. Heide has been teaching Primary, Junior, and Intermediate students for the past 15 years with both the Peel District School Board and the Waterloo Region District School Board.  He currently teaches grade 8 mathematics at Sunnyside Public School in Kitchener.   

For two years, Prof. Heide was the Waterloo Region District School Board Junior Mathematics Demonstration Teacher.  As part of this professional development project, junior teachers were given release time to visit his mathematics classrooms as observers.  Over 250 teachers and administrators have visited his grade 4 and grade 6 classrooms.

Prof. Heide is interested in how children can see themselves as creative mathematical learners.  He enjoys supporting teachers as they implement mathematics programs grounded in teaching through and about problem solving.  He is published in various mathematics journals including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics journal, Teaching Children Mathematics.
