Biography

Dr. Heidi Ahonen, MTA; Professor, Music Therapy; Director, CIMTR (www.soundeffects.wlu.ca); PhD (Joensuu); MA (Helsinki); psychotherapist & group analyst;  professional/clinical memberships: Ontario Society of Psychotherapists, CGPA, AGPA,  IAGP, the Group Analytic Society. She has published seven books, 20 book chapters, 30+ scholarly articles. Presented at 40+ conferences, and has supervised 30+ postgraduate research papers and been external examiner of seven doctorate dissertations. As a clinician, Heidi practices music psychotherapy and has developed the group analytic music therapy and supervision models  and the psychoauditive method. Heidi has an extensive clinical experience and specializes in working with adults who suffer trauma and burn-out. FULL BIO HERE.

 Academic Interests

Heidi’s research program currently covers a wide range of qualitative, Group Analytic Music Therapy and Music Psychotherapy research, Low Frequency Sound Wave- research, and early intervention research, for example:  “Empathic Disruption in Music Group Psychotherapeutic Setting— Re-traumatizing incident or an important opportunity for a therapeutic experience?” and   “Culturally-Based Musical Narration Therapy with Traumatized Refugees.”  As a qualitative research supervisor Heidi is specialized on phenomenology, grounded theory, fenomenography, narrative inquiry, and arts based research. Heidi currently teaches group analytic music therapy, music group psychotherapy experiential, music therapy supervision, and qualitative research.
