John McMurry Chair Undergraduate Programs

The focus of my research is the challenge of managing diverse human activities in large regions while maintaining environmental integrity and sustainability. In studying this over the last 20 years recurring themes have been systems approaches and complexity, protected areas, sustainability, ecosystem health and integrity, ecosystem-based and integrated resource and enviornmental management, and environmental planning and policy. Other areas of long-standing interest include environmental education, environmental thought, and the application of information technology in REM. My main field sites include the St. Elias region of Yukon, Alaska, and BC; the Canadian Rockies; the BC central coast; Australia; Italy; and the Grand River Basin, Ontario.

Although I started my university education at the University of Victoria in Zoology, I finished my undergrad at the University of Waterloo, studying ecology and environmental studies in its unique Integrated Studies programme. My M.Sc. and Ph.D. are both in planning, from the Universities of B.C. and Waterloo, respectively. I have been actively involved in consulting on protected areas, sustainability, state of the environment reporting, and ecological assessment, among others.

Organizations and Links

I have long been involved with a number of non-governmental organizations. I am Editor of Environments Journal and a past Board Member of the Canadian Committee for IUCN (CCIUCN), a Past President of the Environmental Studies Association of Canada (ESAC) and the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication (EECOM). I also spent several years on the Environment Committee of Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC). And I'm a Fellow of NESH - the Network for Ecosystem Sustainability and Health, and a member of IUCN - The World Conservation Union's World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA). In the past I also was involved with the Waterloo Public Interest Research Group (WPIRG), the Ontario chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS), and with the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE).
