PhD, Civil Engineering, University of Toronto, 1998.
MA, Geography, University of Waterloo, 1994.
Bachelor of Environmental Studies, Geography, University of Waterloo, 1992.
Dr. Doherty is a native of Kitchener-Waterloo and proud graduate of St. Jerome’s highschool and the universities of Waterloo and Toronto.
He loves to engage students in the classroom using novel methods such as Team-Based Learning, likes nothing better than to chit-chat in his office lounge, and always makes time for pick-up hockey with students on Fridays. He enjoys a good adventure (cycling, hiking, field trips, you name it) and will talk your ear off about cooking.
His research has transitioned from urban/transport to health geography. He’s exploring some rather novel questions: Can a smartphone be a health device? How are parks making us healthier? Does your blood glucose vary over space? Can text messages make you eat more local foods? Can Google Earth help children tell you their stories? He is especially interested in body-based sensors such as GPS and accelerometers, which are dramatically changing Geomatics, and leading to breakthroughs in our understanding of exposure to risks and disease. Interested? Dr. Doherty would love to hear from you - he collaborates extensively, and supervises many graduate students. Check out his full CV if you want more details.
