SP200: Study Abroad in 2008 (Mexico)

May 19/08

The Department of Languages and Literatures has begun offering the field course, “SP200: Study Abroad” for the first time ever. Under the direction of the Supervising Professor, Dr. John W. Schwieter, and the Study Abroad Assistant, Mstra. Diana Figueroa, this intensive language and culture course introduces students to a linguistic and culturally diverse side of North America. Hosted by one of Laurier’s international partner institutions, Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico, WLU students immerse themselves for nearly three weeks in the Spanish language and Mexican culture. Not surprising are some of the post-trip comments from students: “this was the best time of my life” and “I can’t believe how much Spanish I learned in such a short time.”

In addition to the intensive language course with Dr. Schwieter and many hours of one-on-one cultural exposure and conversation practice from Mexican students from Universidad Veracruzana, SP200: Study Abroad students visit nearly a dozen towns and live in and learn about the linguistic and cultural diversity of North America. During the trip, the group visits indigenous ruins from the 4th century, waterfalls, haciendas, coffee plantations, beaches, river rafting, and one of the best and most comprehensive museums of anthropology in Latin America.

The all-inclusive program package provides students with: international airfare; tuition for SP200; textbook; Universidad Veracruzana registration and administrative fees; airport transfers; cultural partners immersion program; homestay and three meals per day with a Mexican host family; a weekend trip (including food and hotel accommodations in a four-star beach resort) to La Antigua, Cempoala, Quiahuixtlan, Tajin, Tecolutla, Papantla, and Casistas; a day trip to Xico and Coatepec; and a day trip to El Lencero hacienda—one of the many properties once owned by Hernán Cortés.

The success of this initiative has surpassed everyone’s expectations and the Department of Languages and Literatures welcomes all students to explore the enriching possibilities that SP200: Study Abroad and their programs can offer them. Please visit the Department’s main page at for more information about our many exciting programs.
