Noted Islamic scholar to give public lecture at Laurier

The Muslim Studies Option and the Faculty of Arts, in collaboration with the Ismaili Council of Ontario, warmly invite you to a keynote lecture by Dr. Omid Safi in Islamophobia, Justice and Pluralism, on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 7 pm in the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall. A reception will follow the talk.
Omid Safi is a leading Muslim public intellectual. He is currently Professor of Islamic Studies at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specializing in contemporary Islamic thought and classical Islam. He is the Chair for the Islamic Mysticism group at the American Academy of Religion, the largest international organization devoted to the academic study of religion. As of Summer 2014, he is scheduled to move to Duke University and lead the Duke Islamic Studies Center (DISC).
Omid is an award-winning teacher and speaker, having been nominated for over ten professor of year awards at different institutions. His writings have come out from Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, University of North Carolina, and HarperCollins. His next volumes are from Princeton and Harvard.
He has been among the most frequently sought speakers on Islam in popular media, appearing frequently in the New York Times, Newsweek, Washington Post, PBS, NPR, NBC, CNN, and international media. He has recently been designated as the lead Islam writer for the Huffington Post. He regularly blogs at Religion News through "What Would Muhammad Do?" at http://omidsafi.religionnews.com.
