Are You on Track?: Strategies (or Tools) for Success within and beyond Graduate Studies

January is a great time to take stock of where you are with respect to your academic, professional and career goals.  This interactive session will provide graduate students with an opportunity to:

  • Connect with graduate students from other departments
  • Normalize the challenges and opportunities of a graduate program
  • Reflect on academic and professional progress to date
  • Identify resources for framing your academic, career and professional goals
  • Develop an individual action plan

In order to optimize your experience on January 13, you will be asked to complete a few exercises prior to your arrival. Watch for more information.

This session is collaboratively hosted by the Faculty of Graduate and Post-Doctoral Studies, Career Development Centre, Teaching Support Services, and Learning Services.

10:30 a.m. – 10:35 a.m. Welcome and Overview
  • Dr. Matt Smith, Acting Associate Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
10:35 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Wheels Within Wheels: The Overlapping Cycles of Degree Completion and Professionalization
  • Dr. Matt Smith, Acting Associate Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, will give a brief introduction on the importance of syncing degree completion times with professionalization in order to be ready for the marketplace upon graduation.
11:00 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. Wellness 101
11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Actualizing Your Goals: How to Achieve Your Academic, Professional, and Individual Goals
  • This fifty minute workshop, offered by Michael Lisetto-Smith, Manager of Study Skills and Supplemental Instruction with Learning Servcies, will focus on the elements required for accomplishing a successful professionalization program, breaking down the degree and professionalization stream into its core components, as well as developing a targeted action plan to meet your academic, professional, and individual goals.
12:15 p.m. – 12:35 p.m. Lunch (sponsored by the GSA)
12:35 p.m.– 12:50 p.m. Wellness 102
12:50 p.m. – 1:50 p.m. The Degree “Cycle”: Building a Foundation for Self-Awareness and Career Development
  • A Career Consultant with the Centre for Career Development, will give a 50-minute workshop on self- and career-awareness. The workshop will cover the career planning process as well as targeted exercises designed to help you self-identify where you are in the career planning cycle in respect to your degree completion timelines.
