Date: Nov 22/13
Time: 11:00 - 13:00
Location: BA305
Cost: Free

The Office of Conflict Resolution and Support aims to promote a culture free of harassment and discrimination to create an academic, learning and working environment that is respectful of all members of the university community. Working closely with other support services at the university - including Student Services, Counselling Services, Health Services and Human Resources - students, staff and faculty can develop and identify the most appropriate mechanism by which to resolve disputes.

This hands-on session is designed to explore causes of classroom and workplace conflict as well as effective methods for holding important conversations, creating accountability, and improving workplace culture. Through conversation, information sharing, and teaching and learning role-plays, participants will be able to recognize their own style of managing difficult situations and how one's individual approach impacts resolution efforts. Role-play situations may include: dealing with highly disruptive students in the classroom/lab/tutorial, matters of personal safety and security, aggressive student or faculty behaviour during office hours or meetings, power imbalances in student and faculty relationships, (e.g. faculty to chair, faculty to faculty, faculty to student, or student to student, etc) and so on.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • recognize, define and effectively manage conflict
  • hold difficult conversations with greater confidence
  • encourage dialogue, discourage triangulation

This session is open to faculty, academic staff, teaching assistants, graduate assistants, and post-doctoral fellows
