ABSTRACT: The merits of using cross-cultural training as a way of increasing effectiveness in areas such as expatriate assignments or international negotiations has been well established. Ideally, cross-cultural training enables the learner to anticipate necessary emotional adjustments, increase cultural sensitivity, and gain the knowledge and skills necessary for interacting effectively with representatives from other societies. International business primers have become a common substitute for intercultural training. At first glance, business primers appear as an efficient means to convey facts about a target culture. Investigating the efficacy of German cultural primers written in English, is it suggested that primers may also alter the cultural predisposition of readers in such a way that their effectiveness in international business situations might be negatively affected.
